“When you go out into the woods, and you look at trees, you see all these different trees. And some of them are bent, and some of them are straight, and some of them are evergreens, and some of them are whatever. And you look at the tree and you allow it. You see why it is the way it is. You sort of understand that it didn’t get enough light, and so it turned that way. And you don’t get all emotional about it. You just allow it. You appreciate the tree.

The minute you get near humans, you lose all that. And you are constantly saying ‘You are too this, or I’m too this.’ That judgment mind comes in. And so I practice turning people into trees. Which means appreciating them just the way they are.”

About Mutokudo

Mutokudo, the practice of Nothing Special, embodies a philosophy rooted in the belief that we, as individuals, are inseparable from the world around us. This interconnectedness means that no single thing holds greater value than another, leading us to the understanding that, in essence, we are all Nothing Special. This concept invites us to view ourselves and our experiences with humility and equanimity, recognizing the inherent worth of everything and everyone.

The journey to realizing Mutokudo is undertaken through the practice of Zazen, a form of seated meditation that encourages deep introspection and mindfulness. By introducing Zazen to diverse communities, we aim to foster profound positive effects on mental health and overall well-being. Zazen helps to quiet the mind, reduce stress, and cultivate a sense of inner peace and clarity.

Although Zazen is fundamentally simple, it is not easy. The practice requires patience, discipline, and a willingness to sit with oneself, observing thoughts and emotions without attachment. This practice teaches us to let go of distractions and focus on the present moment, leading to a deeper understanding of our true nature and the world around us.

While Zazen is inherently a solitary practice, its benefits are significantly enhanced through group sessions. Practicing Zazen in a community setting not only builds individual fortitude but also fosters a sense of connection and support among participants. Group practice provides an opportunity to share experiences, learn from one another, and strengthen the collective resolve to pursue this path of mindfulness and self-discovery.

We invite you to join us on this journey of exploring Mutokudo through Zazen. Whether you are new to meditation or an experienced practitioner, our sessions are designed to support your practice and help you integrate the principles of Nothing Special into your daily life. Together, we can create a community of mindfulness, compassion, and shared growth, enriching our lives and the world around us.

Mutokudo was founded in 2024 by Ian Momsen, also known as Mon Sen, an ordained Zen monk in the Rinzai tradition. With over two decades of dedicated Zazen practice, Mon Sen brings a wealth of experience and deep understanding to Mutokudo. Their journey in Zen meditation began formally at the Hosen-Ji Zen Center in Kyoto, Japan, where they were ordained by the esteemed Noritake-Osho. During their time at Hosen-Ji, Mon Sen served as resident staff, playing a crucial role in the daily operations and spiritual activities of the Zen center. This position provided them with the unique opportunity to guide and support individuals seeking to experience authentic Zen living and practice.

Mon Sen's commitment to their practice led them to further training at the renowned Zuigan-Ji monastery in Matsushima, Japan. There, under the tutelage of Harada Roshi, they delved deeply into Koan practice, a traditional method of Zen meditation aimed at revealing profound insights into the nature of reality and self.

Now residing in San Francisco, CA, Mon Sen continues to share their extensive knowledge and experience through Mutokudo. Their mission is to bring the transformative power of Zazen to diverse communities, promoting mental well-being, mindfulness, and a deeper connection to the present moment.
